Chapter Thirty-Six

Truth and Planning

Once the shock passes—and believe me it takes a few minutes—I think about how I have a pretty good attitude toward death. I don’t think of it as the end, it is more the soul outgrowing its form. I feel like death is the soul saying, This body no longer fits me. I need more space.

Several people, whom I love dearly, have already made their transition—all four grandparents died when I was young, I’ve lost an uncle, two aunts, and a cousin. My best friend from college passed away five years ago from complications from type 1 diabetes. I’ve always accepted their moving on easily.

I’ve done this by allowing myself to feel every emotion as it comes. The shock, the sadness, the loneliness, they all flow through me until I arrive at acceptance. But this is my dad. While I’ve always known I wouldn’t have him into my middle years, I never thought he’d transition while I was just starting my thirties.

Dad sleeps the entire way home, giving my mom a chance to fill me in on everything that’s been going on. He has advanced kidney disease and started dialysis a month ago. He goes in three times a week for treatment. Neither of my parents recognized the early symptoms. They figured the excessive fatigue and confusion were normal signs of aging. They didn’t go to the doctor until Dad’s feet and legs started to swell significantly. By then he was in acute renal failure.

“What about a kidney transplant?” I ask.

“He’s not a good candidate. Given his age and overall frailty, they don’t put much stock in a new organ taking.”

“There has to be something they can do,” I declare. In my mind I immediately start to catalogue natural remedies. Blueberries are loaded with anthocyanidins, vitamin A, and flavonoids that are essential for kidney health. Apples are rich in pectin that can help reduce cholesterol levels which is necessary to treat kidney disorders. Cauliflower is loaded with vitamin C, fiber and folate which will help the body excrete toxins. Red sandalwood tea is a natural diuretic. I try to remember if I have any of it or if I need to order it.

My mom sees the wheels spinning in my head and says, “You need to talk to your dad before you start going crazy with ideas about how you’re going to heal him.”

“Of course I’m going to heal him! That’s what I do. Why wouldn’t he want to be healed?”

“Talk to him, Sarah. You should know that confusion is one of his symptoms and sometimes he has a hard time tracking what people are saying, so be careful with him. I don’t want to frustrate him more than he already is.”

“That’s more reason than ever to start his healing right away,” I declare.

My mom reaches over and touches my arm. “Sweetie, your dad and I are so grateful for you. You came into our lives at a time we’d both thought we were too old to have a child.
